I gained so much insight from reading the messages on this forum before I left, I feel obligated to write down some helpful hints now that I'm back. I went to Bali in April and loved it! I stayed in Kuta, Jimbaran and Sanur and enjoyed all three for very different reasons. Kuta - good night life, but very crowded with lots of shopping and tourists to go along. Get a full-day spa treatment for only US$20! Play soccer with the natives on the beach every night at 4 pm! Jimbaran - less crowded, more reclusive, great seafood restaurants! Sanur - stay at La Taverna - little "bungalos" moderatetly priced with a restaurant cabana-style next to the water. If you get a chance, go check out the Ritz Carlton - one of the most beautiful resorts in the world. Sanur is less crowded, cleaner than Kuta, there's a boardwalk along the beach with restaurants, alleys of shops, parasailing, etc. Overall, the people were great, the food was reasonable and the countryside is beautiful. Go visit Kintamani and the waterfalls in the northern region. Great hikes, good surfing near Nusa Dua. Try Arak, the local tasteless, odorless, highly flamable alcohol. That's all I can think of for now. I will definitely go back one day!
