A few days ago, somebody asked me if there are spiders in Bali. The person in question was one of those who would "die" if they saw one. I had to tell her that yes, there are spiders and because Bali is in the tropics, some of them are very large (like everything else in the tropics).
Many people in this forum ask about Bali Belly, mosquitos, and other things that might affect their personal health while staying in Bali. Occasionally, I am both amused and bemused by the other experts and their advice. In some cases, I hope the people didn't take the advices posted here and are still alive. Going to any country in the so-called "turd world" is an adventure, not to be taken lightly. OF COURSE there are dangers involved. But, not too many reasons to get excited about. One should always check out the latest and greatest health info available (no need to continually bother people in forums like this, and much info you get here should be taken with a grain of salt: after all, it's YOUR health we're talking about). I can understand how people don't trust their own doctors in their own countries. No one is perfect (including the Balinese). But, everybody should do their own homework first (and not expect intrenet forums to answer all their questions accurately). Many medical services have their own web-pages running. Some are good, some ridiculuous, and others beg the question. Are you ever safe going anywhere?
Yes/No you need a shot for affliction X. If you contract affliction X, you might be able to sue somebody (if you survive). It's not a joking matter to be sick with something serious in Bali. What you gonna do? Ring an ambulance? (Seen the traffic there lately?) Ever checked out a hospital in Bali? Kiss your arse goodbye. Hope you've got very good travel insurance.
In any case, people searching for medical answers in forums like these should at least check out the ARCHIVES for previous "experts" advices. And, if you're too poor to do battle with your local doctor, maybe you should have a look at sites like these (dealing with health issues):
http://www.tmvc.com.au/
Sorry if it's an Australian site...you can't help good luck, can you?
Just some afterthoughts here:
YES, there are mosquitos in Bali
YES, you could get Bali Belly (do you know what it is?)
YES, there are spiders (big ones) and so what?
Have you heard about the scorpions?
YES, most people can't spell Dengue Fever
There are snakes as well...
The bottom line is that Bali is still a fascinating place, and most Balinese have survived so far. So, what are you worried about? Just go, be "prepared" (within reason), enjoy yourself and if you get any fantastic gifts, think about giving something back for the beautiful gifts you got.
