You don't mention where you are coming from. But guessing from the amount of the airfare, you are taking a journey of more than 6 hours. In that case, I would say that Singapore Airlines is worth the extra money. 1st, Singapore offers a little more leg room that Japan or China. It is still pretty cramped; but that's what you get for economy! 2nd, if you can, find out what kind of 'plane you will be flying. The newest 'planes, which SQ will likely use on the long hauls, have these GREAT individually-programmable inflight entertainment units built into the seatback in front of you. LOTS of movies to choose from (15 movie channels, plus news, sports, Discovery etc); music, video games too. Lastly, recently, SQ has REALLY inproved food and drink, even in economy. The food is almost really good, AND, MY FAVORITE, you get champagne in economy (free). Lastly, they tend to be a little more relaxed on the luggage allowance. I've gotten away with a lot of overweight. Oh, and did I mention that you can get United miles.
Hope you have a great flight
