If you have driven in a third world country then it is ok to drive out of the main kuta district. I say this because it is not worth the time and hassle. It is easier to take a taxi. On the other hand it is not so bad drive out in the country if you understand the rules. ie. flashing high beams, honking, and police BS. Remember though it is very cheap to get a driver to take you aroung and you never need to find parking or watch the vehicle. I enjoy driving, but bali is small enough to go back and forth. I think it is worth more effort to plan your schedule and have someone to take you around, just ensure that he understands that you want your agenda followed and you are not inerested in tourist traps. I tis your chose, think about the options. If you want a round the island trip rent your own vehicle, otherwise.... Pricing and options can be found using the forum search. Remember I said you should be familiar with third world driving habits if you want to drive yourself. Nothing like a guy riding through the intersection at a hundred miles an hour with four way flashers on. If you know what this means then you should be ok...Good luck.
