Ritz and Kids

We stayed at the Ritz Carlton (with our one and a half year old child) and while it was a tropical paradise, despite the hotel's claims, it was not a great place to take small kids. My overall impression is that the hotel was designed for adults and then some elements were added in later so that the hotel could claim to be a kid-friendly place.

The Ritz Kids club, is actually two indoor playrooms. We never left our child there because we would have felt guilty going to Bali to enjoy the clean air and ocean breeze, then putting him indoors in an airconditioned room. The staff were friendly and the toys were great, but why couldn't they have an outdoor play area with a slide and swings? I got the feeling that they wanted to make sure that nobody would ever hear any kids.

The pools were no better. The children's pools were all at least 0.8m deep. They were surrounded by stone that was incredibly slippery as soon as it got wet. Kids who were good swimmers or at least over the age of 6 were okay, but the little ones were really left out.

Playing in the sand was fine, but you couldn't even have a child under 6 walk in the surf because the undertow was so strong. Also getting the child down to the beach was an endurance test because the steps down to the cliff were long and steep.

Lots of negatives. We enjoyed our stay but found that we really had to work hard at entertaining our child at the Ritz - a lot harder than we would have thought based on the info they gave us.
