On a recent trip to Bali (Returned 25/07/99) we were constantly approached by young Balinese with either "a chance to win a holiday" or "a promotional questionnaire". The whole ploy behind these approaches is for the Balinese to get the tourist into the office to claim their prize.(I don't think that they are well compensated for their efforts either), All of the people up to and including front office staff are Balinese. I did a quick visit to "suss" to place out and it was plainly a fairly slick operation. They di insist that both of you must be there to "win" the holiday. Lots and lots of tourists going in an out.

However, it is nothing more than a modern variation of the time share with ex pats putting the squeeze on people to buy on the spot. Special offer of 20% discount for on the spot sign up. They even encourage you to pay a deposit by credit card. Cost of $20,000 roughly, for one week "anywhere in world" each year and you pay US$130 for a one bedroom apartment. However, there are other administration fees and costs which amount to AUD$750 before you leave your front door.

As for the offer of a free holiday, it is available in Tweed Heads, Australia, Goa (India) and Royal Beach Resort, Bali. It would cost US$100 Administration Fee and an additional US$170m to bring children, plus travel.

I don't believe the locals handing out the cards know much about the rip off and only get some small reward for getting you in the door for the 90 minute interview. The offer of free taxi rides from your hotel is legit. We found this "opportunity" to win a holiday everywhere. Kuta, Galleria, Legian, Sanur. Best advice, don't waste your time, be nice to the Balinese and tell them you have already been.
