It was not that the children were bored as so much they didn't like the length of the travel. They said they would look back and appreciate the experience later and were glad they went to the places. If staying in Ubud it really depends on the nature of your children. Why not give a mix of the mad and the sublime? Hawkers for them were a little intimidating at first, but then they loved the chatting and bartering and the pained looks and laughter of the hawkers when haggling over various items of junk. Ours seemed to enjoy the shopping and soft adventure activities the most. I hope this helps.
