I will be going to Bali on May 1st, but until starting my internet research today, I knew nothing about the place. I want to thank the Griswalds for opening my eyes to the fact that I am not going to find a perfect, pristine paradise, as many of the commercial-oriented websites have been selling me.
It is scary--the number of people in this forum who completely write off anyone who criticizes the island. I am far more willing to trust the opinions of those who mix the praise with the sometimes not-so-plesant truth.
To be honest, I am looking forward to Bali, but it was my friend's idea, not mine. All I really wanted was a nice, clean, sugary-sand beach to lay on. Now I have a less naive idea of what to expect. Maybe I need to change my goals for the trip and do the culture thing inland.
Thank you, Griswalds, for providing us some balance. It is clear that you are trying to add some real value to this forum for others like me--something that Helen's comment and other responses like hers certainly fail to do.
