My advice would be to stay in Ubud if you would like to visit interesting places inland. I am a cultural hostess and I often accompany my guests to sites of historical, social or/and religious interests. I try to choose sites for their "little history" behind the Big History. And this often leads us to seldom visited places. At least where crowded tourism coaches do not stop !
