The Ubud monkey forest is supposedly the safest and it is very picturesque. The monkeys can be a problem, especially if they think you are hiding food from them. Tuck away anything loose like sunglasses and hang on tight to cameras etc.
If you visit the Ubud monkey forest take time to walk down the steps to the pools at the bottom. Kevin is right about Nyuh Kuning - you should wander through there as well.
How much to get there? If you are going from Kuta or Sanur you should be able to organise a car with a driver for around Rp100,000 for the day. He will drive you wherever you want to go, so make a day of it.
