Is it true that female circumcision/genital female mutilation is practiced by Sasak people in Lombok ? I'm trying to find out this information for an acquaintance of mine who is married to someone from Lombok but he is hazy on whether this is still practiced. They have a little girl and she wants to know if there will be pressure from her spuose's family to have this act done which she does not agree with.
When I was in Lombok I did come across a procession / ceremony as we passed thru a village in central Lombok and our driver implied it was a circumcision ceremony but didn't want to talk about it. Both young boys and girls were being carried aloft on wooden structures.
