US$50-60 is plenty per night.
You have two options to book in when you arrive or pre book with a travel agent. For the 4 or 5 star hotels it would be cheaper to book from home than when you arrive, those hotels normally offer deals, like US$200 for 7 nights.
Alternatively you need to decide what your requirements are, i.e air conditioning, swimming pool.
Kuta has the night life on Legian street, Kuta beach runs parallel to Legian street about 1 or 2 blocks 10 mins walk between, is a beach break, with Airports (infront of the airport runway) a beginners reef break.
Two lanes link Legian Street with the beach front, Poppies 1 and Poppies 2, both have budget accommodation running along these lanes, not many will have a swimming pool but some will offer air con in a few of their rooms. The cost for those without swim pool will rang between US$5-7.5 and US$20 for air con, their is a 4 star hotel that has air con and a swim pool on one of the lanes for US$.
May pay to buy a 'lonely planet' or 'Go Bali' before you go and read it on the plane.
