Sanur's venerable Bali Beach Hotel was built in 1996 with Japanese money given to the Indonesian government as war reparation. When Sukarno saw the monstrosity, he decreed that no hotel in Bali would reach above the coconut tree line. The hotel as renamed Grand Bali Beach Hotel in 1993, following its restauration after a drastic fire which gutted the whole inside of the building, FROM TOP TO BOTTOM. This hotel had been built on a graveyard, a TERRIBLE place to build on in Bali. Room 327 had been reserved for the goddess of the South Seas. On January 20, 1993, the fire that destroyed TOTALY the hotel, left room 327 completely unharmed. This room is now a temple, and daily offerings are made. Of course, this room was never, and will never be rented out.
