Firstly decide whether you want to stay on the beach or not. Annual rentals for 2-bedroomed, furnished houses come in at about 2000 USD per annum. It is arguably safer to stay for a longer period than for a short period. You are less likely to get ripped of if you are going to be around for a while. Locals will acknowledge the fact that you will be spending money in the area for a while and indirectly everybody scores. There are legions of travellers with kids in Indonesia. Personally i would recommend the Ubud area (Gyanjar also) for long term or at least medium term rental. Stay clear of Kuta. Golden rules: never use a Indonesian lawyer, ensure that all contracts are copied and sent to your own lawyer for perusal and filing and NB: ensure that your car rental contract is underwritten for insurance purposes by an authorised entity like a bank etc. Best long term car rental deals are available in Kuta. ciao.
