I fly both airlines on a regular basis. ( i dont have a choice as the companies I work for in Asia , book my travel for me )
In Jan 99 I travelled Australia/Hong Kong/Taiwan return with Cathay Pacific and then :
In March 99 I travelled to from Australia to :
Sri Lanka/Australia/Bangladesh/Australia with Singapore Airlines
I found felt that Cathay had dropped its standard a little ( still a lot higher than most Asian Airlnes ) but couldnt compare to Singapores NEW fleet of aircraft. Each economy seat has an individual screen with upto 30 channels to view AND video games to watch or play.I found Singapores staff just as helpful as Cathay's , If not a little more friendlier.
If I was doing a long Haul as you are...I would also consider the facilities on board that Singapore has to offer.
However , you havent mentioned if you wanted to also have a stop over in Singapore OR Hong Kong on your way. For obvious reasons like cheaper accomodation packages , I would fly with the national airline for the stop over country you prefer.
