What ever is bad you can leave behind or ignor. Take mosquito repellent of course, but it is paradise if you just look. Leave Kuta and the south behind if you are to harried. Stay away from tourist attractions, nothing compares to the grace of the peolple and the beauty of the rice fields anyway. I love Ubud, definitely a tourist trap, but great window shopping and great food at wonderful prices. If you must have beach,Candi Dasa is quiet, Lovina is fun, but not overwhelming like Kuta, and Padungbai is almost unknown. Up counry Tirtan Ganga is beautful, clean, and serene and you get a blessing if you swim in the cool water of the pool it cost less than 25 cents US. Tulamben & Menjanjen snorkling .... there so much more I could say, but you will find more great things while your there!
