Know how you feel--Bali was a dream of mine for years (and years) but as the time got closer I began to panic. My (and the others) telling you not to worry, probably will not work but here are my suggestions:
1. Buy medical and medical evacuation insurance. Probably a decent idea and if you are like me it adds the confidence that since bad things only happen at the worse times--then if you are protected, nothing will happen. I used CSA which I found on the web.
2. If you are scared about the moneychangers, then in use the ATMs. I found them in a lot of places. I got my statements and I think that I lost slightly over the best moneychanger rates, but very minorly.
3. Hawkers were not bad outside of a few areas--notably Kuta beach, and near the volcano--that is even if you are like me and look at everything. At the worst it was some pestering but absolutely no danger.
4. There seems to be a competition at the Forum on getting things at the lowest price--I am impressed with the others achievements--but keep in mind that it is a vacation--and anyway even if you are ripped off the amounts involved are small. BY the way, if you really want it, then buy it even if you are positive you are overpaying.
Above all, just do what you like, when you like--there is so much to see and do, you can not do it all. Best of luck.
