I just returned a few days ago from Bali and I can say that I highly recommend staying in Sanur. I went alone with my 7 year old son and while Sanur has a beautiful beach and access to plenty of restaurants and shopping, it is away from the crowds of tourists in Kuta. If you are looking for something a little less "party-oriented", I would definately stay in Sanur. I stayed at the Gazebo cottages for about $38 US a night, which included a cooked breakfast. It was right on the beach and very clean. I booked my reservations through a local tour guide - Bali Triloka Candra. They can also arrange your airport transfer and any tours/activities you may be interested in. When I arrived in Bali I really hadn't pre-planned much and I ended up having them take me on 3 tours. My tour guides name was Suija and he was wonderful and spoke very good English. You can email Riza at binol@denpasar.wasantra.net.id to make arrangements with them.
I hope to make a more thorough report soon, but I am still catching up fron my jet-lag! I hope this was helpful and that you enjoy your trip. Bali is an incredibly beautiful island, but even more wonderful than the scenery are the kind people and rich culture there.
