Yes you were lucky, many haven't been. A very expensive vacation can be totally ruined by a case of Hep A (or other nasty stuff). Remember this culture ,as with many in the world, use their hands to cleanse after toileting. I personally don't want to risk running into a place where someone didn't do a great job! This is an area on "no control" for a tourist. Why not be prepared as best you can?
