I read the Forum and decided that based on the side effect risks of the pills I would not take them. I am not a MD but noticed that the US malaria risk notification seemed to be an ongoing joke with the other groups. I did however take a can of Off Woods and tried to avoid (not well) the 45 minutes before and after sunset, which I read somewher was the biggest mesquito biting time.
Again I am not a health expert, and I might evaluate the risk differently if I was really off the beaten path.
Go enjoy. Get a driver to take you around. Great crafts. Recommend Jamu-Jamu for massages. Actually expect it will be better when they finally get the staff trained. Right now it is a gorgeous place--very upscale New Age--with beautiful, but not well trained (at least for the massage and head massage) staff.
