Emma,
I'm no expert on Bali (going there for my second time in May), but here is what I think about the place:
Yes, May will be hot & humid - that is the norm in Bali, but just slow down to "Bali pace" and it is great - do things in the morning and at night & spend the middle of the day in the pool or at the beach :)
Bugs - it all depends on what you are used too - I'm used to more bugs in Aust, so I had no problems - but if you are from a cooler climate, you might find more than you are used to, but don't worry an insect repelant will keep the mossies away.
Illnest - don't get too carried away !!! whenever you eat food you are not used to or eat more than usual (as most of us do when on holidays) your system will rebel !! but if it is cooked or peeled is it mostly safe - just keep well clear of the tap water !!!!!
Clothing: the only clothes you need is what you wear for the trip + some underwear & maybe a few spare t-shirts - the rest you can buy when you are there, not only is it fun to go shopping in Bali, but the stuff you buy there is ideal for Bali conditions.
Money & safety: I feel that Bali is one of the safest place to go to, but don't be silly !!! keep your spare cash/travelers cheques/credit cards in the hotel safe until you need them. Don't carry everything on you all the time, if you are unlucky enough to loose what you are carrying, it is noce to have some back up in the safe !!!
As for how much you need - that depends on you - a meal will cost you anywhere from Rp 100,000 at a 5* hotel to Rp30,000 at a local resturant, drinks are from Rp10,000 for a beer to "A LOT" for wine or imported spirits. Last trip I averaged Rp200,000 per day & I felt I lived like a king.
Just go with an open mind and enjoy what comes your way :)
