Craig if you stay in Kuta or Legian (i have not heard of the hotel you are considering) you wont find it intimidating. Sure the hawkers are all around you, but if you are just polite and say no thanks and walk away they will leave you alone. They are Bali and they are a bit of fun, however never tell them that you will buy off them tomorrow because trust me they will never forget you.
Kuta and Legian is great to stay in if you like the nightlife and shopping. If want something more relaxing than hussle and bussle I suggest you try Nusa.
