I find this topic fascinating. I do know of some parallel 'arts' contests that charge an entrance fee, but that ususally gives the applicant a one years subscription to the reputable journal or magazine. A token fee is given to the jurors who are well-known in the fileld.

There is another notorious source with an impressive sounding name that charges an entrance fee. The qualified winners are then announced and the likelihood of them buying hard copies for friends and family increases the profits substantially. In the field, they are known as a marketing business and nothing else.

The figures for these things are astounding when you consider how many thousands of people, wanting a moment in some spotlight, are willing to spend a few bucks for that chance.

Think twice.
