That area is great - you are near the hub of things - shops and restaurants are all within walking distance and the metered taxis to areas nearby only cost about R5, R10 to Sanur. The beach is great in Legian - a little bit like a tropical Muizenberg beach, with a long walking area and rolling waves. The locals find the tide pulls a bit rough, but I was used the riptides and found the swimming great. Sanur is not that swimmable as the waves start right out past a break and the beach has seaweed and seagoetes.
Kuta is a little like home facing parking attentants - just smile and walk on if you are not interested. Certainly the hawkers get in your face, but it is never unpleasant and certainly we felt very safe compared to home.
