In Ubud, if you really want nice budget, try Sagitarius on Monkey Forest Road. It's much cheaper than $35, but clean. The staff is completely trustworthy. Tell the owner, Ketut Yustana, Deborah from San Francisco sent you. I have done import business with him, and he'll get a kick out me sending him business, and it couldn't hurt in your price negotiations. All the rooms are different, and some are much nicer than others, so look at a few. If you want a bit more upscale and really want to spend a bit more money and get a pool, Nick's Pension is a good value.
