I suggest up to $900 each in travellers cheques, and take $100 in Australia cash. Keep your money and plastic cards in the Hotel Safe. Also take a small calculator. Change $200 the first day into Rupiah - grab your passport and calculator and a clear head - go to a large Money changer like PT Central, it looks like an old-style bank with a long counter. Ask for 50,000 Rp notes. You will both have over a million rupiah the 1st day. Place most of this into the Hotel safe.
Each day take out with you what you plan on spending. But keep a backup of 10,000 Rp for taxi back to the hotel.
