If you can fit stuff in your luggage, do that. It's a lot cheaper, you don't have to wait for it to arrive and there's a better chance of it arriving intact. I also once had a large wooden crate packed and simply paid to take it as extra luggage. - It's cheaper than actually shipping.
I've also shipped large quantities of items I could not carry back. I shipped air, and it arrived in less than a week, with damage only to the most fragile item. It was expensive though. I don't have experience shipping by sea, but it's much cheaper. It also takes about 6 to 8 weeks to the U.S., according to the shippers I dealt with.
