Go to Sanur if you want to relax. Go to Kuta if you want to get horribly hassled by Javanese hawkers, drink and dance on tables and go to world wide chain restaurants and stores you could go to anywhere else. Sanur is a good place to lay on the beach, get a massage and get over your jet lag before you head up to Ubud or north to the mountains, and actually see Bali. And there are still plenty of restaurants and cute shops in Sanur.
