I have never had any trouble, just declare it, they have a good look, then if there are no bugs, off you go. I have also brought back some bamboo wind chimes that were fine, but the people at the next desk had borer in theirs so they had to give it up. The customs guy told me just to look for the small holes, shake them and look for dust coming out. I have seen this in some of the baskets which have wooden bottoms woven into them.
