An interesting book about culture and tourism regarding Bali is "Bali: Cultrual Tourism and Touristic Culture" by Michel Picard. Originally published in French it was translated to English in 1996.
What I knew came from there :) I wish I had first hand knowledge but unfortunately I can't be in Bali all the time *sigh*
I feel sorry for the people in Serangan but I guess I'm probably not one to judge the politics of another!
