Not buying into the argument of legality, but I am really sorry to hear about your shell. Doesn't seem right you can buy something unsuspectingly only to be told it's endangered.
I wonder what customs does with all these confiscated goods?? Seems like a good topic to discuss here :
What are peoples experiences of things bought in good faith, only to have it taken from them back home for whatever reason. Perhaps that could help others in the future. I have heard of cases where they pulled timber & bamboo pieces apart checking for mites or whatever, & when satisfied handing them back to the traveller in pieces. Personally I've only had the odd spice & dried fruit confiscated, but then I have been sneaky with more precious items.
