Gold is sold by the gram. The price follows closely the exchange rate of the Rps, and therefore it is relatively stable in hard currencies.
The best place to buy gold jewelry is definitely in Denpasar, Jl Hasanudin. This is a moslem quarter, with dozens of gold shops. You'll get the cheapest prices in the island there. They have 22 kt gold (which is actually 20 kt,) 20 kt and 18 kt. Prices per gram vary very slightly from shop to shop, and not worth making a big deal about it, unless you are buying a large quantity.
If you need REAL 22 kt, then you buy a lump of 24 kt gold, and take it to Celuk for making it into 22 kt gold jewlery.
In Ubud, at the gold shop at the market, you will pay about double, and they don't seem to ever have 20 kt gold. In Celuk, in the large (rip-off) shops on the main road, maybe up to 4 or 5 times, unless you go inside the village, and you'll do better
