Isn't it Miguel Covarrubias's book (written in 1936)? Covarrubias was a Mexican illustrator who came with his wife to Bali after a very long journey in the 1930s. I believe that he was the 1930s Fred Eiseman Jr.( I refer you to "Bali : sekala and niskala", published in 1991.)

Covarrubias's book is a reference about Balinese culture and life. There are so many passages describing the Balinese way of life that are still accurate nowadays.
Bali is a changing picture but the frame is still the same over the years.
Bali is a highly adaptable island (that however we still must protect against excesses or stupidities).
