The inexpensiveness of an area in Bali is not indicative to the types it attracts. In fact there are many, many cheaper places to visit/stay in Bali than Kuta. Kuta is a 'happening' place, ie parties, pubs, clubs, hangouts, restaurants, shopping, etc, etc - mega amounts of people (locals & tourists), not much culture to be seen here. So avoiding Kuta would ensure the enjoyable holiday you were after. It is also good to experience the Kuta thing for a day or two, but if you've only got a week or 10 days, I would suggest just drive through Kuta, just to get a 'feel', but keep driving till you reach your haven - Ubud perhaps?
