You're right, the first night is a write-off. We were very close to Little India on the way out (Albert Court), and it was a really fascinating cultural experience - you practically cross over an unseen border as you enter through the gates. Spectacular architecture and building decorations etc. We walked to Raffles Hotel and wandered around - gorgeous old building with a lot of history, didn't spring for a Singapore Sling though - $18C!! Didn't make it out to Sentosa, though I wanted to - buddy had a premature case of Bali Belly from some tomato sauce on the airline food. There is a website for Underwaterworld with a cool little movie of the underwater tunnel - wich I could have seen that. Instead, we ambled down to the Merlion Park, the court house etc. Great city for wandering around, and lots of incredible history. Night Safari was lovely. On the way back we stayed at the Furama in China town. We found a little shop on a side street selling BALINESE souvenirs for very reasonable prices!! Hilarious! People were wonderful, felt very safe and comfortable in C-town, much more so than Little India. We found some reasonably cheap food, but everything for drinking from tea and pop to beer was extremely expensive. Actually, I would have loved to have more time in Singapore, maybe down the road. The hotels were modest but very clean and comfortable. The Albert Court in particular has a lot of character, being an old renovated building. Have a good time!
