'Do a large majority of locals in Bali smoke??'.. . About the only locals that don't smoke are the chooks, because thay tend to burn their feathers. Seriously, yes, the vast majority of MEN smoke. You will seldom see a woman smoking. Interestingly, you don't seem to see too many butts (buts??) lying around though. This is odd in a country where the garbage collection is performed by the wind, rain and sea.
They say that the olfactory senses are the strongest.. so when walking down Victoria Street (little Vietnam) on a hot, humid day here in Melbourne and a diesel truck passes at the same time as a local does smoking a Kretuk (clove cigarette), I am instantly whisked back to Indonesia. I, unlike some others, don't mind the smell of kretuks as they do have an interesting effect on me.
