Hi Colleen,
after having been many times to Bali I think the question whether you get run over by hawkers depends very much on yourself. If you look to the goods which they offer, the hawkers will of course (!!!) trying to sell something to you. At the end of the day this is their job and they are only trying to earn their money.
But if you aren't interested in nearly every cases a "mau tidak, terima kasih" (i.e. "i don't want, thanks")will be enough to make them walk away.
Also a very booooored expression in the face helps to make them walk away. Honestly, you should practice this expression while you are at home. You will be amazed how much it helps ;-)
After all, Bali is not "Disney World" but a Third-World country with a lot of poor people who see their chances of earning a little bit money by selling stuff to the tourists.
Stay relaxed, have a smile (also for all the hawkers) and enjoy your holidays...
All the best,
D.C.
