I fully agree to the first part of you message. But I do not suggest to rent from the owners but rather throug an agency. The reason is, that most (maybe all) of the better villas are owned by owners from overseas who do not live in Bali. So if you have any hassles it's much better to have an agent in Bali, than an owner in New York.
Further on, it might not be cheaper to rent from the owner. Anyway, I aggree, I too would never go into a hotel again.
