Hi Diane,
I think you're going to be pleasantly surprised! You're in for a real treat - your expectations are so low. Bali is beautiful, magical and hearing well-informed options/experiences from this wonderful forum will benefit you greatly. You will hear suggestions about areas to avoid (with children especially) and tons of other info. Bali is very safe! 95% of Balinese people are Hindus and this is what makes Bali so wonderful. Balinese Hinduism doesn't allow for undesirable behaviour or lifestyle. They have a peace about them, selfcontentment and a selfless way - there's no time to waste worrying about a better life, they have it, hard as it is at times, but that's all part of their 'balance & harmony'. Sure you may come across dubious characters, chances are they are not Hindus though.
Your kids will be very safe there, in fact a lot safer than in our western world. They embrace children and adore them, the Balinese are totally family orientated.
There's a range of transport available. There are large tourist buses & smaller mini-buses which can be booked at agencies (these are on every corner!). Or you could hire your own driver and car, probably a 4WD at the cost of around Rp100,000 - 200,000/day. Whilst walking along you'll be asked 'transport-transport' - talk to a few, get a feel, then choose one. It's good to negotiate a price beforehand and english speaking a definate advantage as unwittingly they'll become your tour-guide as well, coz' they'll literally be thousands of things/events happening as you travel along the way that you'll ask and he'll explain. Alternatively, drivers can be arranged through your accommodation place, depending on where you're staying the price is sure to be reflective. You may prefer to suss-out your own driver. Taxi's are also a good option, ask if the meter works if not negotiate beforehand. All these options are very safe and lots of fun. The Balinese have the BEST smiles and the BEST sense of humours, that's why an english-speaking driver is good, you'll have heaps of laughs. If you're really worried about being taken somewhere and robbed, then stick to the taxi or buses companies. It wont happen though.
Bali belly effects a few people, maybe just the runs, could pay to take anti-nausea or anti-diahorrea tablets just in case? Eating out was always difficult - too much to choose from. Restaurants everywhere, offering anything from McDonalds & Wendy's to traditional Balinese Warungs and street carts (which offer the best food I might add).
Hope this helps in some way?
Jenni.
