Belinda, I strongly recommend you stay in or near Sengiggi if it is your fisrt trip, as it has the concentration of what tourism facilities there are in Lombok, and nice beaches too, especially going north towards the Gilis. You will be impressed when you arrive at Mataram, it is clean and pretty well organised although baggage handling is rather amazing. You can do most of the island including the Gilis and Kuta from Sengiggi, maybe book a few days at Kuta if you want to explore that area, but dont miss out on the Gilis etc.
