Stay at Sengiggi Beach.
Kuta is extremely quiet - but well worth a look. I got the impression that it was mainly surfers. It is not white sand as we know
it - sort of ground up coral.

The Beaches around Sengiggi are clean and a bit like a Fijian Island.

Go to the Gillies if you get a chance, a day trip is easy from Sengiggi.

Plenty of restaurants and cheap transport.
Didn't see any too many hawkers and those that are there would just as soon chat as sell you something.

Plenty of ladies selling pineapple and bananas on the beach.

There was some beautiful pottery and batik made in particular villages. You buy direct from the 'factory'.

Remember that Lombok is mainly Muslim and so naturally the people seem a bit quieter more reserved than the Balinese.

Hope this helps, I'm sure you will love it.
