A lot of what's been brought up has been exaggerated, and really only apply if you're hanging around the type of areas you most definately will not be hanging around with your children.
Hawkers can be a lot of fun, if you're not interested - make no eye contact. I spent 6 weeks in Bali last year touring right around and only encountered 3-4 beggers, usually mother with child in arms. Certainly not a shocking sight, light perhaps in India or the like. The babes looked quite healthy and well looked after. Begging is illegal on Bali. (Doesn't mean you wont encounter a bit). The food is good, just about whatever you like and in whatever class/situation you like. Bali is very safe for children, they love children, and will beam an even brighter smile when faced with yours - they are beautiful people! And it will be an experience your children will NEVER forget. They treasure it!! Ubud is especially welcoming and great for the family.
