The election is actually on 7th June so I don't understand why people are getting nervous about May. Basically most Balinese support Megawati so there isn't likely to be much pre-election jostling for votes in Bali. I'm going to Ubud in May to visit friends and their only concern was that I might be travelling via Jakarta.
My guess is that the worst that can happen is that not so many tourists go in May so you may get more attention from people trying to sell things to you than you would normally.
I wouldn't worry too much.....
