These guys aren't hawkers. They aren't trying to sell you anything
and they don't put in honest value for honest pay. If some guy offers
to carry your bags, a tip in most other places would be in order.
You shouldn't have to argue price to get your own stuff back.
Furthermore, as to the 'temple guides' they asked for $10US for
an hour of work! I don't get that kind of pay at home, and I work
a lot harder than that and my expenses are higher too. I have no
problem whatsoever paying a fair price for anything, but these guys
don't play fair. Is that your hobby, trying to stir things up?
