I too did the solo thing for a month in Bali. Most of the time I spent in Ubud, based myself there and travelled to other parts for a day or so here and there, even over to Lombok and the Gilis. Whilst in Bali I felt completely safe, never a moment I looked over my shoulder - you just get a feeling of being unsafe and I never experienced that on Bali and I did lots of bike-riding on my own as well. In Lombok I didn't feel the same way, lots of Muslims there and they didn't seem as welcoming and warm as the Balinese. I didn't have any bad experiences in Lombok, I was just constantly aware of being vulnerable and tried not to place myself in particular situations. The Gilis were great. I could talk more but I have to go and talk my girls to basketball, they're nagging me - maybe you can email me if you want any more info?
