Hi!

On my last visit in Bali I had my Laptop with me as well. Same Reasons as yours, plus being able to read my local daily paper in the Morning is something I really do like when abroad ...
To answer your Question: make sure you book into a Hotel with Direct-Dial Phones. I don't think that there is a defined Phone Plug "Standard" in Bali, but all I have seen are (US-wired) RJ11 Plugs. But: Most of the Hotel Phones I have seen are hardwired into the Wall. Best Solution (apart from twiddling with the lines and "crocodiles" or needles) is: Go get a "double female Adapter" (don't know how this is called correctly, it is two RJ11 Holes connected) for RJ 11, so you can use the Phone Side of the Wire. Unplug the phone (all I have seen are RJ11), put the Plug in this Adapter, and your Modem Cable in the other Side. Of course you don't need this in case your Modem comes with RJ11 Hole.

Also make sure you have a local ISP Dialling in Number, as AOL is unknown there, and Compuserve have only one very slow and unrelyable line for the hole island.
Check out www.ipass.com for ISPs providing international Dial-In. The IPASS Number in Denpasar worked flawless, much better Performance than any Internet Cafe.

Hope it helps!

Manfred
