We travelled from Bali to Mount Bromo just before Lebaran on the 18th January. Had a long wait at the ferry due to all the travellers returning to Java for Lebaran celebrations. Were frequently stopped at the roadside by youths collecting money for the local mosque building fund but they gave us no hassles. Stayed at Bromo two days then went by mini bus to Malang and were there for Lebaran. Saw lots of happy people celebrating but no hassles apart from my wife falling into a hole in the footpath in Malang square at night! Then travelled 8 hours by public bus from Malang to Yogykarta. The bus driver was an absolute maniac (as most drivers are there anyway!) We thoght many a time we we going to die that bus trip but we got there in one piece. They have unique set of road rules that says "biggest can do what he likes". Otherwise we had no hassles and saw plenty of the country. We flew back from Yogykarta to Dempassar on Garuda as we had enough been scared witless by the way they drive. One bus trip was an interesting experience but enough!
