If you're a amateur cyclist, don't cycle around Tuban or Kuta! Try it up around Ubud and other country places, less crazy. You don't have to wear a helmet on a push bike, but on a motorbike you do, and could be fined quite heavily if caught without one. If you charter a motorbike and driver they will supply a helmet for you, very dodgy and usually doesn't clip up - take your own over if that is your plan.
