Hi John,
Take as little as possible with you so that you have room for all your goodies in your bags upon return. A couple of pairs of shorts, a couple of t-shirts, thongs or sandals, swimming costumes, underwear. Really this is all you'll need to take as casual clothes are cheap and made for the tropical climate. Don't take beach towels with you. Simply buy a few cheap sarongs for the beach as they are light weight and dry quicker. If this is a problem, use the hotel's towels. I generally pack a pair of jeans, tennis shoes and socks to wear at night but it is quite acceptable to go out anywhere in t-shirt, shorts and thongs. Pack a basic medical kit, sunscreen (it's pretty dear over there) and a walkman to listen to your new tapes or CDs. To take it a bit further, I take one small bag plus my hand luggage and if I need to I buy a cheap bag to take all my new gear home.
Hope this helps. Enjoy!!!
