I've flown several times with Garuda (international and internal, as well as Merpati and Bouraq). I wouldn't really say there's any serious problems with them. If you have special meal requirements, continually check that its on your booking because we ordered vegetarian meals (mainly because we'd heard they're often nicer, not because we're vegetarian) and they didn't have any for us once we were on the plane. As far as safety goes, if you ever travel in a car, there is no reason to worry about air safety. You're much more likely to die on the way to the airport than once you're up in the air. The flight attendants are always very pleasant, although they're often a little tired because they probably did the overnight flight back from Bali.

I think Garuda is also good because you feel like you're already in contact with the 'foreign' before you've even landed. The inflight movies are okay, the magazines can have interesting articles in them and the food isn't that bad. They are also cheaper than the other airlines, and I don't think the extra money is worth it.
